Reclaiming the past
Economic development of unprecedented proportion is rapidly transforming the countries of Southeast Asia. Modernization has brought with it economic development to Southeast Asia, but it has also inflicted a heavy dose of Western values on people's lives, thereby upsetting many people's sense of identity.
As the essays in this book point out, development is a paradox bringing with it blessings, but also having both a social and cultural costs. The number of publications on issues of concern to the ASEAN countries is on the rise; Reclaiming the Past adds to the richness of this encouraging trend.
