Mastering Facilitation : 7 Principles and 1 Law
To help you understand the word "facilitation", I will take you on a short journey into my past. My first encounter with the word "facilitator" was in 1995, when I joined Dunamis Intermaster, which was FranklinCovey International's representative in Indonesia. When I first began working with them, Dunamis appointed me as a facilitator for their training programs, such as, the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and "First Things First". A senior manager in the company explained that the title "facilitator", as shown on our business cards, was more prestigious than the term "trainer", and thus, would command higher fees in the market. We informed potential clients that facilitators, rather than trainers, would conduct our leadership programs and soft skills workshops. We explained that we employed a learning process in our leadership programs that was engaging and that utilized scripted discussions. Well, I then thought I knew everything there was to know about facilitation.
Have you find meetings or workshops are boring and not giving clear results? Have you ever been in a meeting where you do not know what this meeting is all about? Have you lead a meeting and there is no involvement and engagement from the participants? Or seen only one or two active participants while the rest seems careless or do something else? Or you have been in series of meetings in a day that you cannot do your own work?
