Under the Lantern: Putting the Disabled in Indonesia Under Spotlight
Disability remains a taboo subject in Indonesia. Individuals with disabilities are often seen as outcasts and burdens on society. To this date, people continue to perpetuate the idea that the disabled are less intelligent, less able, and thus incapable of becoming functioning members of society. Consequently, many of them are sidelined and fall between the cracks of traditionally recognised respectability. These people are denied their rights, their equal opportunities, and are often separated from the rest of the society. The book is hoped to be able to contribute to the struggle for the justice of the disabled community in Indonesia by exploring the conditions which they live and the various problems they face. Some of the articles contained in this book also try to suggest a number of efforts that can be taken by the government, relevant institutions and stakeholders, as well as the wider community to give our disabled brethren their due rights.
