Japanese religion : a survey by the agency for cultural affairs
This book may be characterized as a description of the religions of Japan, a survey of the major religious organizations with particular reference to their present circumstances, and a presentation of statistical and other essential data.
It is frequently said that in order to comprehend a people's values and ways of thinking, one must first understand their religion. The hope behind the preparation and publication of the present volume is that it will prove useful not only to those who are particularly interested in the study of Japanese religions but also to those who wish to learn more about Japan and her people.
With the same objective in mind, the Ministry of Education earlier published an English-language book entitled Religions in Japan (1959; second edition, 1963). The publication of the present volume, based on more recent data and on completely new manu-scripts, marks the twenty-first year since the enactment in 1951 of the Religious Juridical Persons Law.
The material contained in this book falls into three parts. Part 1, prepared by some of the rising younger scholars of Japan's reli-gions, consists of interpretative descriptions of Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, and other religious traditions. Part 2 focuses on the present situation of Japan's religious organizations, and part 3 presents the most recent statistical data as well as other information relevant to their comprehension. Parts 2 and 3 were prepared by the staff of the Religious Affairs Section of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
To the several authors and editors, to the religious organizations which so kindly sent in data, and to those who translated these materials, I should like to express my heartfelt appreciation.
