Intercultural communication in contexts

---

Those involved in intercultural communication face an in increasing number of challenges and difficult questions Is it enough to identify differences among people? Do we actually reinforce stereotypes by emphasizing differences? Is there a way to understand the dynamics of intercultural communication without resorting to lists of Instructions? Don't we have to consider the broader social, political, and historical contexts when we approach intercultural communication?

Such questions reflect rapidly changing cultural dynamics-both within the United States and abroad-and in tum effect intercultural communication. On the one hand, there are many world and regional movements toward unity, and technology has increased our ability to communicate with diverse groups. On the other hand, continuing conflicts and rising tensions illustrate ongoing intergroup conflicts.

Martin and Nakayama have written Intercultural Communication in Contexts in part to address issues such as these Specifically, the authors encourage students to think critically about intercultural phenomena from the viewpoint of three research perspectives: the traditional sociological-psychological approach that emphasizes cultural differences and how these differences influence communication, the interpretive approach that emphasizes understanding communication in context, and the critical approach that underscores the importance of power and historical context. The authors believe that each of these approaches has important contributions to the under standing of intercultural communication and that they operate in interconnected and sometimes contradictory ways.
